Search for inner peace
In my quest to achieve inner peace, I have tried different things. I have worked as an entrepreneur for 30 years and was washed out without any joy of life for some time. The almost only thing that was making me relax was scuba diving. One year I went to dive to Thailand. Between dives, we were able to go on some day trips and to get to know the Country. We have one excellent Thai guide who talked about the Buddhist understanding of life and our purpose. Also, he introduced us to proper Thai food, not one in restaurants for tourists. That was a real discovery, and I started to think: how about coming here to live?
How I get started?
A few years later, I started to study deeper Buddhist philosophy and learned some liberating facts. I tried to meditate and found my self in a better place, mentally. Once I joined a five-day silent retreat in my own County. In the mornings, we have the opportunity to practice Yoga. That was one of the most rewarding experiences I ever had.
Mediation
Even though Buddhist mediation has answered many of my questions, Yoga meditation opened a new field of exploration. Based more on inner feeling, breathing and joy of life it was a nice addition to my everyday Buddhist meditation practice.
This type of Meditation helped me straightened my core life principles founded in Buddhist philosophy. Yoga is not just a set of physical exercises, but a holistic stand on our place in life and the world as a whole.
I learned about Yoga meditation first from books. Still, later I had the best real-life experience when I practiced this type of meditation, watching Yoga With Adrienne videos on YouTube. She has a genuinely positive approach to life, and I turn to her every time I had some bad feelings or doubts.
How Yoga and Meditation practice changed my life
Of course, I practice Yoga as well, Asanas and Pranayama breathing as well. They are all parts of whole Yoga teaching, and I think these should not be practiced or understood separately form each other.
I must say, however, that Theravada Buddhist meditation and it’s set of guidelines is still my main source of Mindfulness.
Just start the journey
Sometimes, it is hard to practice those techniques, or to achieve goals by yourself, just watching YouTube, but I suppose it is just a matter of building character. If you set your mind to it, and you find those practices helpful, it can also be a good way to do it.
Still, I think that nothing can replace some group practices, in classes, retreats, or even in local Temples (if any in your neighborhood). Here in Thailand, there are plenty of local Temples, where you can feel the atmosphere and enjoy the silence and outer and inner peace.
Anyway, if you haven’t still tried, I wish you would. Trying is the only way that you can decide is this the right thing for you. We are all are different, and we find different incentives helpful. Find your path to happiness and inner peace. When you are firmly committed to it, you will find benefits so obvious, that your practice with developing with ease.
